I think it’s worth pointing out that white males make up ~30% of the US but roughly half the deaths from police violence. The reason it’s worth pointing out is not to compete in an “oppression Olympics” (which seems to be a thing with the progressive left) but because if you want to actually address a problem you need to describe it accurately and openly talk about it. I’ve been told that even mentioning those statistics are racist, because they don’t conform to the ideological narrative.

I wrote up a piece on it if anyone is interested: https://taboo.substack.com/p/police-violence

There’s a real problem when these deaths occur on a regular basis and with little accountability. An obsession with race won’t let us actually talk about it.

The left is obsessed with race... but the right is obsessed with backing cops no matter what. And that’s why stories like Shaver’s slip through the cracks. Cops have killed innocent Asians too: you can look up Tommy Le, Christian Hall, and Angelo Quinto. Yet none of them get much attention because Asians are too small a group to care about.

The “back the blue no matter what” mentality on the right is astounding. Right-wingers will say “I do not comply with vaccines, the authorities can’t tell me what to do”, but then when innocent civilians are killed by cops, they say “Well he should’ve just complied. Respect authority”.

We need to have a serious discussion about policing in America that takes into account everyone killed by police. A nuanced discussion.

Thanks for bringing up those three cases of Asian deaths, I wasn’t aware of those. I’ve dug into the statistics quite a bit around this problem and now that you bring it up I realize that I’ve only focused on white/Hispanic/Black and completely ignored Asian and Indigenous cases just because I assumed the sample sizes would be too small. I’ll definitely look more into that.

Yeah, I think it’s Shaver’s case doesn’t fit either narrative. The right would have to admit wrongdoing from police and the left would have to admit that the problem is less race-driven than they want it to be. But I also think that woke ideology indoctrinates people to have less compassion for some groups, particularly white, white-Hispanic, and Asian victims of police violence. The media could cover these cases more. But social media doesn’t drive them either. So I think part of that has to do with media narrative, but also partially woke indoctrination causing people to lose compassion.

As a non American I look to your history to try and work out how your country's police operate as they do today. The USA is the only western nation that tried to ban alcohol which brought about the gangster era of crime. Even when prohibition ended the damage was done and criminals roamed the streets with high powered automatic weapons. The death rate of the police during the 30s was the highest ever recorded, with some criminals actively hunting police with their BAR weapons.

In response the police changed tactics, acted less like other police in the UK or the Commonwealth and became more like the military with the use of overwhelming force such as the shootout with Bonnie and Clyde. This seems to have stuck as the USA lurches from one domestic crises to the next. The 70s was also a bad decade for police deaths due to civil unrest and a worsening drug problem.

Now thanks to advanced in technology policing has become relatively safe and methods of apprehending criminals are more effective, so much that your prisons are bursting at the seams. What is needed now is law reforms and a different approach to the drug problem so it becomes less of a police issue and more of a health issue. To bad your healthcare system is even worse than your law enforcement departments.

Brilliant essay and thanks for the Shaver reference because I hadn't know about that shocking execution of an innocent man.

I have nothing to add to your spot on analysis except - "aren't we getting weary of celebrating stupidity?" People such as Jemele Hill are either hopelessly dumb, incurably insane, or both. Same with all the other race baiters and hustlers. As you note Peng, no Asians or Blacks or Whites are exactly alike. We are mostly decent. Mostly respect each other. And mostly want to get along and enjoy one another. But there are evil people looking to divide us. And far too many useful idiots willing to do their vile bidding.

I wouldn’t call these people stupid or dumb or insane. That’s what they want you to think. The race grifters are very smart and they know just how to say the right things the liberals want to hear.

I think you misunderstood me. I think their legions of followers are quite stupid and probably insane, to boot. The leaders, on the other hand, are brilliantly manipulative and pure evil.

I don't think that most of their followers are stupid or insane. I think a lot of them are just plain lazy and unwilling to challenge their thinking.

Sorry but if you think that the beating death of a black man by five black cops in department headed by a black woman in a city with a black mayor is "racism," then you are most definitely stupid, crazy or both. I have lost my patience with idiocy.

Excellent post, all true and thanks for saying so. This one about sums it up: "I need so many people to understand this regarding Tyre Nichols". The prog left "needs" someone else to affirm their delusion. That is the only way it becomes reality. And that is one reason why cops killing white guys is not headline news: it doesn't affirm the delusion. But as the saying goes, even though 500,000 flies cannot be wrong, I won't eat horse manure.

And BTW, Elie Mystal is a complete idiot.

I wouldn't say Mystal is an idiot. He's someone who figured out how to make money by finding racism everywhere, just like Ibram X. Kendi and Robin DiAngelo. They get rich off guilty White liberals.

You left out Sharpton. A fraud and hustler who must have a Ph.D in how to make a fortune from grievance. And, of course, the obligatory white liberals who elevated that cockroach to riches and tv "fame."

Sharpton encouraged rioters to attack Jews and burn down Jewish businesses in Crown Heights in 1991. Never forget.

Oh believe me, I don't. I was working in Manhattan then. It was beyond belief that the half-witted Dinkins let it get so out of hand. Flat out anti-Semitic pogrom allowed to take place in America's most Jewish city.

He is a lawyer with a Marx like ideological bent that enables him to misrepresent court decisions, lie about facts and spew hatred of the country. I have the misfortune to read his tripe in The Nation, which has remained impervious to my many complaints.

I am less cynical than you about his pursuit of money. His approach is much more deeply rooted, IMO.
